Here's our festive catwalk video for Macmillan! ⛄️

Earlier this week we held a festive catwalk show at the Trafalgar Wharf office.  We all wore our festive jumpers and strutted our stuff, as can be seen in our video.

The whole team took part with members of JBT Marine and The Drystack taking to the runway to show off their Christmas jumpers. Everyone who took part in the catwalk also gave a donation to Macmillan

We hope you enjoy the video! πŸŽ„

Wishing you a very merry Christmas.

How much money can you save by joining Boat Club Trafalgar?

Let us show you how spending £8,600 on a boating membership can get you a whole lot more than spending £16,503 a year and getting lumbered with 'the same old thing' every weekend!
Ever since we launched Boat Club Trafalgar, people have been asking us to 'Show Them The Money'.  They know they want to get into boating, but they are not sure exactly of the best way to finance it.
So rather than having the same conversation again and again, we have done some research into what it costs to run a boat, versus, being a member of Boat Club Trafalgar.
Comparison – Owning a Boat vs Boat Club Trafalgar
We compared the costs of owning a new 7-8m boat financed over 3 years against being a Platinum Member of Boat Club Trafalgar for the same period of time.
Here are the costs of owning a new 7-8m boat for 3 years on finance (new boat price £64,000):
Item
Cost
Boat purchase (inc. 3 years finance)
£75,504
Maintenance (servicing and cleaning, etc)
£5,290
Insurance
£1,050
Storage (marina berth or drystack)
£10,926
Safety equipment
£519
TOTAL
£93,289

If after 3 years the boat was to be sold, taking into account depreciation there would be an estimated return of £43,780, making the cost of boat ownership over 3 years £49,509.
Now take a look at what you might spend to be a Platinum Member of Boat Club Trafalgar Platinum for 3 years:
Item
Cost
One-off joining fee
£4,400
Platinum Membership (£595 per month)
£21,420
TOTAL
£25,820

Yes, that’s right – it’s just £25,820

So, the costs of owning a boat vs joining Boat Club Trafalgar for a year are:
Boat Ownership
Boat Club Trafalgar
£49,509
£25,820
It’s an incredible saving of more than £23,000. That’s nearly HALF!
Now you know why people are making the decision to go with Boat Club Trafalgar.  It’s because there actually is a way of 'having your cake and eating it' when it comes to boating.
When you’re paying almost £18,000 just to store and maintain a boat over three years it’s got to be a serious consideration to buy our Platinum Membership instead.
And Boat Club Trafalgar works out massively cheaper than boat ownership when you take depreciation into account. So that’s the finance side taken care of.
A Whole Fleet To Choose From – For A Little More Than Annual Boat Storage.
With Boat Club Trafalgar, you are able to enjoy our range of premium, new RIBs and powerboats, without committing to owning just one boat.  Come and try out some of our Finnmasters and Ballistics to see why our members rave about them.

All you have to do is turn up and go.  No worries about insurance, safety equipment, maintenance or storage or launching. Plus you get a free RYA Powerboat Level II course included with your membership and all the other training you need to enjoy the boats and the Solent.
Great Location – Unlimited Bookings
Our location gives you unbeatable access to the Solent and the surrounding areas, with the site situated just minutes off the M27. The location of Boat Club Trafalgar makes day trips across to Cowes an accessible and feasible option for those living in London.
Our great location at the top of Portsmouth Harbour allows you to be in the Solent within 20 minutes of leaving our pontoon here at Trafalgar Wharf, allowing you to dash across to the Isle of Wight for lunch in less than an hour.

Winter storage. Have you got yours arranged yet?

Make sure you have your boat stored safely this year ready for winter.  Here at Trafalgar Wharf we have safe and sheltered moorings in our marina (for boats up to 9 meters in length) and storage ashore for boats up to 18 meters.

We are ideally situated at the top end of Portsmouth Harbour (only minutes away from the M27) and we're protected from the gales and rough seas.

Look after your boat over the winter so she can look after you when you're out enjoying yourself on the water the rest of the year.

Call Corinne now on 02392 387833 before the storms arrive and she'll give you a quote to get your pride and joy safely tucked up for the winter.

Press Release - Boat Club Trafalgar proves to be a massive hit

Friday 28th November 2016

When Steve Anam signed up to be the first founder member of Boat Club Trafalgar, it was a gut instinct decision.

“I hadn’t thought about joining a boat club before. In fact, I didn’t even know what one was until it was explained to me,” he said.

“But when I saw I could choose from a fleet of brand new boats to head out onto the Solent, for about the same price as annual storage, I thought it was an unbelievably good way to get out on the water.”

Billed as the ultimate in convenience, the concept of a boat club is all about getting on the water – without the hassle of owning your own boat.

Jonny Boys, MD of Boat Club Trafalgar explains the new club concept.

“Members get unlimited use of a fleet of brand new premium boats. Using the 24hr smart phone app members can instantly check availability. They can book up to four boats at any one time, so they can easily plan ahead.  It’s zero hassle, maximum joy.”

Steve says he’s already had great value from his first month and that joining Boat Club Trafalgar was simply a no-brainer.

“The fact is that I’ve never been out as much since joining the boat club and I think it’s fantastic. As well as the fleet, the free RYA Level II Powerboat training is part of the membership and the guys at Trafalgar Wharf will get you handling the boats with confidence and skill.”

As Jonny Boys explains, a boat club is the Airbnb of the marine world.

“The sharing economy is part of the future. Why pay for a boat, pay for the depreciation, get the hassle of cleaning, insurance and storage when you can just turn up and go? It’s the smart choice for intelligent people who want an effortless way to have fun.”

Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier - Changes in Portsmouth Harbour

Earlier this week the Deputy Queen’s harbour Master, Gideon Sherwood, talked to a meeting of Gosport NCI (the local Coastwatch station) about the work going on in Portsmouth Harbour in preparation for the arrival of the new aircraft carrier, Queen Elizabeth (provisionally taking place in May 2017). The harbour entrance area is the busiest water space in the UK.

The current dredging activity is going OK, with only about two million cubic metres to go. The channel itself will be dredged to 9.5m for its full width with the main part having 10.5m. The notorious hazard of Hamilton Bank, just outside the Portsmouth channel to the NW of Spit Bank Fort, has already been reduced considerably in height but the plan is to deepen it by a further 4.2m. It is pretty likely that maintenance dredging will be needed at intervals after the current work is finished. Apart from the bulk dredging, fishing for ferrous objects detected by scanning has produced, among other things, a German unexploded bomb as well as the “friendly” torpedo that received good news coverage recently. More alarming was a non-ferrous German “ship-destroyer” mine that was picked up by accident.

The problem is that Queen Elizabeth needs to be on a straight course with only a six-degree margin approaching and passing through the harbour entrance, unlike the current ferries and freighters which can enter on a curving track. These limits mean that during entry or exit the harbour entrance will be closed to both outbound and inbound traffic (including small vessel traffic in the Boat Channel on the West side). Carrier movements are only likely to take place around HW Springs, and entry or exit will not take place if the wind exceeds 20 knots.

Lots of new navigation marks have turned up over recent months. These mainly provide navigational transits for the carrier’s use.

• The large green pile between 2 Bar and Castle buoys (Castle Pile) provides a transit with the War Memorial.

• The sets of yellow piles in the Bomb Ketch area provide an entrance transit, while the sets in the Spit Bank Fort area provide exit transits.

You will have noticed some changes to buoyage – the movement westward of Outer Spit SC buoy is the most obvious. Most of these changes are temporary while dredging is taking place, but Admiralty charts are corrected very frequently so it would probably not be a good time to buy new charts or update your chart-plotter cards until all this has settled down. However, a permanent R channel buoy named Spit Elbow will be placed between Spit Refuge R and Outer Spit SC buoys.

Details of impending changes will appear in Navigational Warnings and Local Notices to Mariners.

Given the difficulty of entry and exit for the carrier, it may be expected that routine visits will use the anchorage near Stokes Bay, and escort vessels will be picked up at sea.

As might be expected, the MOD police presence on the water will be considerably beefed up, and QHM is getting new and better radar.

Catch a fish whilst out on your boat

At last, the weekend is here.

If you're going out on your boat this weekend to do a spot of fishing then watch this video to learn how to tie a handy fishing knot.  I'm not sure what size fish the guy in the video is planning on catching - I'm guessing a shark!?!

Safety whilst out boating is so important so please make sure you and your family have all the training and knowledge you need to make your trips safe and fun.  JBT Marine, the RIB sales company on our site, run lots of RYA training courses.  Why not give them a call and get booked in for some Autumn boating.

They are able to tailor their course dates to your needs so just let them know which courses you are interested in and which dates suit you, and they will figure out the rest.

The courses on offer include:
RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course - £279
RYA Intermediate Powerboat Course - £309
RYA VHF Radio Course - £100
RYA First Aid Course - £100
Own Boat Tuition - POA

Give Kat a call on 02392 397000 or email training@ribsforsale.com for more information about these courses and dates.

PRESS RELEASE - Boat Club Trafalgar Launches at Southampton Boat Show

If you’re looking for a smart way to enjoy boating then you might want to check out Boat Club Trafalgar, the brand new members club from the owners of Trafalgar Wharf & The Drystack in Portsmouth.

Billed as the ultimate in convenience, it’s probably the easiest way to get on the water without the hassle of owning your own boat.

Jonny Boys, MD of Boat Club Trafalgar, explains the new launch.

“There are lots of people who don’t want the hassle and upfront cost of owning their own boat, they simply wouldn’t get full use out of it. We’re offering something that will appeal to boaters that want zero hassle and maximum flexibility.”

“Members get unlimited use of a fleet of brand new premium boats all powered by Yamaha engines. They can zoom over to Cowes in a Jeanneau Cap Camarat 7.5 or treat clients to a day out in a Ballistic 6.5 RIB. They can take their friends and family out for a birthday treat on a Jeanneau Merry Fisher and have a romantic overnighter the following week on our Finnmaster Pilot 7.”

Boat clubs are big in the US where people describe them as “the country club on water”, and it’s easy to understand the appeal when you take into account the normal ownership routine.

“Our members know that our team do all the work, that includes storing, cleaning, fuelling, maintenance and taking care of insurance. Club membership is about having a great experience and making the most of your leisure time.”

Boat Club Trafalgar builds on the success of The Drystack and offers the ultimate turn-up and go service. Jonny explains how the membership works on a day to day basis.

“Using the 24hr smart phone app members can instantly check availability. You can book up to four boats at any one time so you can easily plan ahead.  It’s zero hassle, maximum joy.”
Boat Club Trafalgar membership is not much more than the annual cost of storing your own boat and there are other significant benefits too.

“As well as the fleet, you’ll also get all of the tuition you need, including RYA Level II Powerboat training as part of the membership. Even if you have never been on a boat before, we’ll get you handling one with confidence and skill.”

As Jonny says, Boat Club Trafalgar is the ultimate convenient way of getting on the water.
“We’ve got a great location at Trafalgar Wharf, which is ideal for the Solent. We’re just off junction 12 of the M27. We’ve got great boats. We’ve also got a great team that look after members’ every wish.

“It’s the smart choice for intelligent people who want an effortless way to have fun.”

Knot or Fist – that is the question!

It’s going to be a beautiful weekend here on the south coast so whilst you’re sitting aboard your boat in the sunshine, cold drink on the table, music playing and water lapping, why not try your hand at making one of these.

Now I’ve heard people referring to them as ‘monkey knots’ and ‘monkey fists’.  I’ve seen them attached to keys, on deck-shoes made from the ends of laces, and hanging from zips on clothing.

Let’s see if you can make one, and then post a photo on our Facebook page.  The best (and maybe even the worst) attempt will get a bar of posh chocolate in the post.

Go on, give it a go.

Summer BBQ and Winter Storage – what a funny mix!

We had our annual BBQ last weekend and it was a huge success.  So many of our lovely customers and their families came along and enjoyed the hog-roast, the cold drinks, the live band and the great company.  The weather was awesome too.

Now, I’m not saying that our summer is anywhere near to being over, but, I do want to give you the heads up about a great winter storage offer that our sister company down in Chichester Harbour are offering.

If you, or a boat owning friend, are looking for boat storage in Chichester Harbour for this winter then call our sister company Thornham Marina on 01243 375 335.

It's all going off with a bang this evening – Don’t miss it!

One of the great things about living here in Portsmouth on the south coast is all the activity we see on the water and in the air, and last night and tonight are no exception.

You may have seen the incredible Red Arrows doing what they do best in the sky yesterday, but don’t miss the Cowes fireworks tonight.  They really are a sight to behold.  You’ll no doubt hear our ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaahs’ from here.

The fireworks start at 9.30pm so make sure you, your family and friends are on your boat in plenty of time, or viewing from a good spot to watch, and enjoy.

We don't just store boats here - check out one of our multi-talented team mates.

Check out Phil, our super talented Lifting Technician.

What a lovely deep channel we have!

The dredger was here this week carrying out its annual maintenance to make sure that our channel from the marina and Drystack stays nice and clear and deep.  It was a little on the noisy side but it didn’t take them long.  It was pretty interesting to watch too.

Did you know that they take the mud they dredge about 16 miles out to sea before opening the bottom of the barge and releasing it near to The Nab Tower.  So our channel should now stay clear and deep for another year so you can enjoy going out on your boat.

Free storage ashore for your boat between now and the end of September

Would you like a month free storage ashore to do some maintenance on your boat?  Maybe get some of those little jobs done that you’ve been meaning to do, but have never got round to.

All you need to do is call Corinne on 02392 387833 by the 15th August and she’ll book your place.

Would your life-jacket save your life?

If you're heading out on your boat make sure you, your family and friends are all wearing life jackets.  That might sound like an obvious thing to say, but RNLI research has shown that out of 98% of people carrying a life jacket only 49% wear them all the time.

I strongly believe in wearing a life jacket whilst on the water and I thought I would share some advice on why it is so important to wear one in the unpredictable conditions of the sea.  It could buy you time and save your life!

First of all you need to make sure your life jacket is readily available and accessible on board for when you get onto your boat.

If you are buying a new life jacket, make sure you check the fit. It won't be as effective if it is not snug around your shoulders as it won't keep your head afloat. Also, when buying a life jacket, you should look at the Newton rating. The Newton rating is relative to the weight of the intended user.

Another interesting fact is that one third of life jackets that the RNLI's sea safety volunteers have seen, would fail to work due to poor maintenance. That is why our sister site, Thornham Marina in Chichester Harbour, have teamed up with Seasafe to provide boat owners with a hassle free life jacket servicing service.

All you have to do is pop into the Thornham Marina office with your life jacket, complete a short form with your name, address and phone number, then Thornham Marina will send your life jacket to Seasafe where they will service it in their factory.  Seasafe will call you to give you some general information about your life jacket as well as things you may not realise need replacing or fixing. Seasafe will then return your life jacket to Thornham Marina within 14 workings days for you to collect.

I think we all agree that wearing our life jacket is a very sensible thing to do, so get yours and your families serviced soon.

Click here if you would like more information about Seasafe and the services they provide.

Call Jeanette or Courtney at Thornham Marina on 01243 375335 to get yours booked in.
