We name the newest member of our forklift family

She's a sight to behold with her super green clean engine, picking the boats out of The Drystack racking system and launching them to the water. She works alongside our two current forklifts, Emma and Fanny, aptly named after Lord Nelsons wife and mistress.

So what did we call our newest family member?

Watch this video to find out, and if you want a price to store your boat in The Drystack, or some information, then call Corinne on 02392 387833.

How to get to Ryde Harbour by water

Have you ever been to Ryde Harbour in your boat?  If you have then you'll know its a tricky harbour to get into. Its not only tidal and drying, but the entrance is inbetween two stone walls and hard to spot on your approach. Not the easiest harbour, but well worth it once you're moored up.

You're able to access Ryde Harbour two hours either side of high tide which means a trip there has to be planned very carefully.  Oh, and don't forget to pay the Harbour Master for your stay when you leave.

Last week, Boat Club Trafalgar arranged a guided boat trip for some of its members across to Ryde with their RYA Instructor Chris Moody. This was their first guided boat trip and it was a huge success so I know they are planning some more.

I thought it was a pretty informative video and wanted to share it with you incase you fancy taking a trip over there sometime.  Enjoy :)

Shark spotted in the Solent - But is it a Great White?

Last week, our MD, Jonny Boys, asked Solent boaters to keep their eyes peeled for the rumoured Great White of The Solent.

To his surprise he has already received an entry from someone who took a picture of a shark in Langstone Harbour.

Simon Masson is the first person to enter the competition to spot a Great White in the Solent. "I saw this fin breaking the water in Langstone Harbour and I think it was a shark.  Although I was on the beach and it was some way out, I took the picture as it was such an unusual sight.  I saw the Boat Club Trafalgar competition to win a membership and thought I'd enter just in case it was a Great White!"

Jonny said, "There certainly is a lot of wildlife in the Solent and this proves that it's worth keeping your eyes open as you never know what you'll see. We'll have to send this photo off to the Shark Trust to see what they make of it."

Keep your eyes peeled when out on the water. You could be the first person to have a confirmed sighting of a Great White. And even if you don't - there's plenty of great things to see, including the Solent dolphins.

It's going to be sunny this weekend - here are some great day trips in the Solent

The summer is finally here (we think!) and we're loving it. With the arrival of the sun, there is no better time to get out on your boat and enjoy it. So, I thought I would give you some ideas of fantastic day trips around the Solent for you and your family.

Yarmouth town is located in the western Solent and has main ferry services operating from its harbour. Yarmouth is known locally as being a great spot for fishing and the harbour is always busy with ferries and small boats. During the summer, Yarmouth Castle is the perfect place to visit for fantastic sea views and family picnics. It will take you approximately 2 hours to reach Yarmouth from Trafalgar Wharf at an average cruising speed.
Lymington is a Georgian market town located on the southern edge of the New Forest. There are two large marinas giving you plenty of places to berth. Lymington has a large number of shops, boutiques, restaurants and pubs so you have a great choice of places to go for a relaxing day exploring the town. Lymington is around a 2.5 hour cruise from Trafalgar Wharf.
The Hamble River is a picturesque, quiet river at the entrance to Southampton Water with plenty of pubs and marinas dotted along its length. Hamble Point Marina at the mouth of the river has a chandlery, plenty of berths and a pub called the Ketch Rigger, a great choice for a Sunday lunch.
For an afternoon of shopping and a leisurely pub lunch, you can visit Hamble-le-Rice, a village full of cobbled streets and fine dining.
Much further along the Hamble is Swanwick Marina with plenty of pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area as well as the Boat House Café in the marina itself. The Hamble is around 1 hours cruise from Trafalgar Wharf.
Wherever you go this weekend, have a brilliant time :)

What do you know about the National Coastwatch?

The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) is a voluntary organisation set up in 1994 to restore a visual watch along UK shores after many small Coastguard stations closed.

NCI stations have been set up along the coast. Each station has a qualified and highly trained team to watch over its own particular area whether it's a popular seaside town, busy port or shipping area. Accidents will always happen at sea and along the coastline. Wherever there is an NCI station a watchkeeper will be looking out for danger and ensuring your safety on the water.

Each station is manned by a team of fully trained and dedicated volunteers who keep a daylight watch up to 365 days a year. Stations are equipped with telescopes, radar, telephone and weather instrumentation, as well as up to date charts.

A log of all water-based activities is kept during each watch and, when requested, weather conditions can be passed to yachtsmen and fishermen before they put to sea. Also with the new generation of web cams they can identify sea conditions for those who wish to check on the weather or sea state prior to doing any watersport activity, hopefully reducing the need for MCA response and RNLI call-outs. During each watch other activities such as canoeing and diving etc are closely observed, as are bathers, walkers and climbers who use the shoreline.

Trafalgar Wharf & The Drystack's local station is at Gosport.  You can receive radio checks and current local weather and sea conditions by calling on CH65 or by calling 02392 765194 during watch hours. A handy tip if you are planning a day trip on The Solent and you aren’t sure about the weather conditions.

You can find out more about your local NCI and the National Coastwatch Institution in general by clicking here.

Forklift erection!

You've probably seen our huge Wiggins marine forklifts launching and moving boats around here at Trafalgar Wharf & The Drystack, but would you like to see one of these mighty machines being assembled?  Below is a quick time lapsed video of the lads putting together our newest forklift.  It's quite incredible.

Our newest marine forklift arrived on site back in February, all the way from the US, to join her two sisters Emma and Fanny.  Fitted with a super green Volvo Penta engine fitter she really is a clean, green, boat-moving machine.

Enjoy the video, and if you want a little more information on the new girls green engine then click here, you'll also be able to read about the new HUSS diesel particulate filters we added to Emma and Fanny.

Did you know this about Ballistic RIBs?

You may already know that our MD, Jonny Boys, also owns JBT Marine RIB sales that is based here at Trafalgar Wharf in Portsmouth.  JBT Marine specialise in building and selling Ballistic RIBs, along with selling other new and used RIBs and Powerboats.

But you probably don’t know that when he acquired the rights to build Ballistic RIBs, he not only used his years of experience to make many positive changes, he also ensured the boats went through rigorous testing before JBT Marine started to market them.

Jonny entered five Ballistic RIBs into the famously unforgiving 5-day Trans Agulhas race in South Africa to put the RIBs to the ultimate test. The Trans Agulhas is a 1000km race around the southernmost tip of Africa well known for unpredictable sea conditions and shark infested waters.  Whilst the Ballistic RIBs performed incredibly well throughout this race, many lessons were learnt and design adjustments were made accordingly, making the Ballistic RIB one of the most capable RIBs of its kind ever made.

If you’re thinking about buying a Ballistic RIB then click here to see JBT’s current selection of new and used Ballistic RIBs.

Alternatively, if you’d like information on their other stock RIBs and powerboats click here.

To arrange a viewing or sea trial here at Trafalgar Wharf on any of these RIBs, or for more information, please contact Jeremy or Gareth on 02392 397000 or email them at

We Care for Air

We are working towards a cleaner and greener environmental set up here at Trafalgar Wharf & The Drystack and so we have fitted some new exhaust systems to our marine forklifts, Emma and Fanny, that we use in our Drystack.  These clever exhausts reduce up to 99.9% of the soot that comes out of the engines which is better for the people working around the machines, better for the boats in The Drystack, and of course better for the environment.

These HUSS diesel particulate filters are a very efficient way to collect soot.  They offer a certified way of collecting and burning the soot, used widely in California they meet CARB and International standards.

We flew one of HUSS's top engineers, a chap we call 'American Steve' (because we already have two of our own Steve's here), all the way from Palm Desert in California to help our Tom Harding and Mark Compton fit these exhaust systems to the girls.

If you're interested in the technology then click here to read about the system

Our newest Wiggins marine forklift (name still be to advised) who arrived last month already has a super green Volvo Penta engine fitter to her producing much lower emissions and a lot less noise.  There is a chemical called Adblue added to a separate tank which gets mixed within the engine and the chemical reaction that takes place creates nitrogen and steam (water) to ensure that the emissions that come out are less harmful to the environment. Nitrogen and water both naturally occur in the atmosphere.

So this means that we now have 3 Wiggins marine forklifts. We are the only drystack in the Solent to have three marine forklifts so we are guaranteed to always be able to launch your boat.

Meet Steve, the manager of Boat Club Trafalgar!

We thought it would be nice for you to learn a bit more about our new Manager of Boat Club Trafalgar, so let him introduce himself!

My name is Steve Rodwell, and I am the manager here at Boat Club Trafalgar.
I was born and raised in Kenya, East Africa, and I recently emigrated over to the UK in 2016 with my family.

I started boating at an early age, spending most of my free time exploring creeks, fishing, spearfishing, diving and water skiing with family and friends.

I have travelled extensively throughout East Africa & Southern Africa, my journeys taking me to South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Rwanda, East Congo, Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa amongst others.

I have climbed the two highest mountains in Africa – Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, cage dived with great white sharks in South Africa, white water rafted down the Zambesi River, hot air ballooned over the Masai Mara game reserve and I have seen the gorillas in Uganda.

I like to travel with my family visiting places of interest, and I enjoy kitesurfing, diving, camping & watching a good game of rugby!

I have 17 years experience working in the marine industry, and I am very happy and excited to have joined the Boat Club Trafalgar team. I am looking forward to seeing all our happy members using the boats down at Boat Club Trafalgar soon!

Come down and visit us at Trafalgar Wharf to meet Steve!

“When anyone new comes in and signs up for our new boat club over the next few days I’ll refund 100% of their first year’s money when Federer wins Wimbledon.”

Would you cross The Solent in one of these?

You're probably familiar with the children's nursery rhyme about the owl and the pussycat going to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat, but, can you imagine going to see in a boat made out of a giant pumpkin?

Well that's exactly what Dmitri Galitzine did a few years ago, and today we received the official video.

Dimitri had the award winning giant pumpkin delivered here to Trafalgar Wharf & The Drystack and we helped him turn it into a sea-going vessel, complete with a couple of outboard motors.

Watch one man and his rather large vegetable boat crossing The Solent.

Entrepreneur sets up boat club in the Solent

Sea lovers who fancy cruising the Solent on top-of-the-range boats but don’t fancy blowing £100,000 on one can take their pick from a super fleet thanks to a new club.

A boat club, one of the only ones of its kind to feature powerboats on the Solent, has been set up by marine businessman Jonny Boys.

For a monthly fee, members of Boat Club Trafalgar, which runs from Trafalgar Wharf, get access to six boats, ranging from a 6m Ballistic rigid inflatable boat (RIB) to a Finnmaster T7. The scheme comes with training.

Jonny, MD of Trafalgar Wharf, The Drystack and Boat Club Trafalgar, said the idea was to make boating easy for people.

He said: ‘We suspected there was a gap in the market for people who want to go boating but who do not want to spend the capital on purchasing a boat and also do not want the hassle of ownership.

‘There are hassles of ownership as you have to buy a boat, have it maintained, cleaned, stored and insured.’

‘With this boat club, it’s a simple concept; it’s unlimited boating from our fleet of RIBs and powerboats for a simple monthly fee.’

He added: ‘It’s proving very popular both with people thinking about coming into boating who are not ready to make that step of buying a boat, but also with people who know about boating but who want a simpler way of boating.’

Jonny has a wealth of marine industry experience.  He set up JBT Marine, which specialises in RIBs, in 1999.

He also took over Thornham Marina in Emsworth in 2004. He set up Trafalgar Wharf with an investment company in September 2008 after Vosper Thornycroft vacated the area.

Tom Sanderson, who is running the boat club from the Portsmouth base, said: ‘People have busy lives. Some people just want to go out boating and want the experience, not necessarily own the product, it’s also a great stepping stone for someone who does not know much about the world of boating.’

The scheme, which was launched at Southampton Boat Show, officially goes live on March 1st.

There is a one-off joining fee of £4,400 and a monthly fee of between £295 and £595. For more go to or call (023) 9270 6599.

Trafalgar Wharf’s Donation Helps Portsmouth Sail Training Trust’s Falcon Fly Again

Portsmouth Sail Training Trust’s 29 foot safety launch Falcon is back on the water thanks to an incredible effort from a team of companies and individuals who donated their skills and services to get her back afloat.

Following accidental damage in late 2015, Falcon was off the water, causing a big setback to the PSTT’s valuable work.  Falcon is PSTT’s safety launch and supports more than 80 young people from disadvantaged areas in Portsmouth as they learn to sail and row and gain a variety of marine and other vocational qualifications.

As part of the restoration, Trafalgar Wharf stepped in to provide free storage space for Falcon.

“There was a fantastic community effort by a number of companies and the Royal Navy all working hard to get Falcon back into ship-shape,” said Jonny Boys, Managing Director of Trafalgar Wharf.

“We offered to lift, store and launch Falcon at our 24acre boating facility at the top of Portsmouth harbor. It helped the team get her back on the water in double quick time. It was great to be at the official presentation following the refit of Falcon and meet everyone who worked on her. On a personal note, it’s probably the only time I’ll get to have my photo taken with a Rear Admiral.”

Rear Admiral Paul Bennett presented a plaque celebrating her restoration to Alan Dorricott, BAE Systems’ operations lead for Fleet Time Engineering. The presentation was attended by representatives from the restoration team and many of the companies involved in the project.
